There are a number of identities for Zhang Jun, as well as various life experiences. He served in army, worked in film industry, went to Fine Art Institute, started a decoration firm, designed buildings etc. He used to be addicted to painting and now are indulged in photography. He is now the Secretary General of 5 Colours Foundation, helping more than 200 handicapped kids study art, together with several teachers.

Among all these identities, Secretary General of 5 Colours Foundation and photographer are in the same period. If there is more connection, the peak of photographing occurred when he joined 5 Colours Foundation. I believe it is destiny rather than coincidence. Such works cannot be achieved without a pure heart, attention to humanity and years of living experiences.

I have been friends with Zhang Jun for 30 years. In the 1980s, he was a solider when I worked in Chengdu Painting School after graduation. He often hanged out with me and He Duoling. He would sometimes pick up my daughter from kindergarten by bike. Back in those days, he rode the best bike—a Phoenix bike with bell.

Photographers can turn ordinary moments into immortal visual images. Years may also fixate eternality. These years, we have spent time together in painting, football, travel and slot machine. Now we are together helping handicapped kids.

Zhang Jun is a very sentimental person with a strong sense of justice. He often demonstrates people’s inner thoughts in his painting. Even when he fell into photography, he mainly focuses on people, even in his photos about scenery.

Some artists’ works are empty even though people’s appearances are depicted because there is no emotional connection between artists and the people in works. Such works lack vitality and influence. Zhang Jun, on the contrary, pays great attention to interpersonal relations. He has a lot of artist friends. He likes these friends, these places and stories. He lives among these people and inside the story. “Taking a photo is like retrieving a part of self from somewhere in the world. Fragments of dreams or pictures can finally come together as a self-portrait.”. His works are visually stunning and strongly emotional.

It is not a matter of technique when artists achieved a certain level. Some artists often make up ideal images and add awkward explanations for their intended themes and thoughts. Zhang Jun, on the other hand, wants to depict people around him. Many themes are not far away; they are close to life. Life is happening and he captures the hidden simplicity and truthfulness hidden behind cliché.

I wish Zhang Jun can create more and better works. I wish Zhang Jun can help more handicapped children. May Zhang Jun realize his ideal self-image.
