From the experience of artistic history, we know the job of reforming history is to know and create it. From a historical perspective, everyone lives in an evironment of historical culture and cannot isolate himself from such a background. Luo Ying’s paintings tell us knowing history is a process of cultural discovery and choice. And creating history means cultrual transcendency and production. In other words knowing and creating history means your creation reflects history and is the history from the future standpoint. It is the history that puts you in the past and contemporary perspective. Luo Ying’s line image is an amazing union of artistic history and the contemporary culture. At the intersection of the past and present, Luo Ying creates her unique image in artistic history—line image.

  Chinese culture is characterized by linear thinking, giving rise to the powerful language mode in painting: gufayongbi (using the brush to paint the outlines of images), which has become the cultural gene of Chinese painting history. So can it account for the contemporary practice of history reproduction? Yes, Luo Ying’s line image is the answer, in which she creats history on the basis of knowing it.

  In traditional Chinese visual culture, a line system was established, concerning eighteen painting styles of lines. Line images painted according to the traditional styles exhibit the aesthetic consciousness of Chinese rural civilization. Luo Ying puts in the same painting computer-made lines that are reminiscent of information and industrial civilization together with traditional lines characterized by rural civilization. By thus doing, she has not only created the line system of her own style but offered a new thinking mode and perspective on Chinese painting creation. Luo Ying’s focus is on the artistic innovation of tradtional visual art in the contemporary era.

  If traditional paintings realized the cultural orientation of lines in terms of aesthetic consciousness through gufayongbi, in Luo Ying’s paintings, she has deconstructed the powerful language of traditional art by deviating from the traditional painting norms, doing modificaitons to lines of classic paintings and making holes in the painting by paper burning. And by thus doing, she has acomplished the spiritual orientation of painting images in contemporary times: the query and criticism are the premise on which a painter’s artistic system could be established. Luo Ying’s line image is the product of information era, possessing the data feature of a information sign. We might as well regard the broad computer-made line as the nineteenth style of line, which reflects the value of visual creation in new times.

  The broad line in Luo Ying’s paintings is smooth, mild, and dignified, with no edges or corners, carrying with it the oriental spirit of mildness, modesty,and respect as well as the unique cultural temperment of information era. Luo Ying holds traditional linear thinking contributes to line image with a heavy cultural foundation and independent aesthetic consciousness. She has got her secret in incorprating the traditional linear thinking into the contemporary environment and creating visual images of contemporary aesthetic value. Luo Ying’s line image indicates the contemporary transformation of traditional art needs courage and wisdom and it needs painters to take it as their duty of creating artistic history to establish the Chinese cultural identity of contemporary linear thinking, based on traditional linear thinking.
