Any distinguished artists must have his or her own style. Dong Xianzhou is exactly one of these outstanding artists. He followed the traditional Impressionism pathway of Chinese painting, but combined it with methods of Western Oil painting, through absorption, digestion, experience and experiment to form his own style.

Different oil painting methods are favored by different Chinese oil painters. They choose the ones they need, use the ones they love. However, different approach may lead to the same goal. Dong Xianzhou, a well known and widely respected oil painter who has been working on sketch, has express his understanding of Chinese element in oil landscape painting.

His oil landscape paintings come from Mother Nature, but these are not simple sketch depicting the natural environment, rather than expression of passion and perception. For Dong, the important thing is how to draw not what to draw. It is to draw spiritually, honestly and vigorously, to give vivid life to the pictures.

Dong received classical professional training from his six years studying in Academy of Fine Arts, under the famous painter Professor Zhou Yuwei, had laid a solid foundation for Dong, with excellent skills in sketch and application of color. All these have been reflected in his painting.

I have strong feelings for his oil landscape painting. All these work has recorded his pathway, his footprint and his affection. He discovers beauty in daily life with his sharp artistic sense. Only when the beauty of objectives causes to painters to reach their deepest feelings, painter can produce a vivid picture and move readers, lead them into imagination and thought. In his works, people can see the painter drawing in hot summer forgetting the annoying mosquitoes bites, drawing in front of the colorful willow tress and water lilies, drawing in cold and windy white mountain black water. This is really a pleasure to watch.

Master Wu Guangzhong once Said, ‘Chinese and Western paintings are dummy couple, they cannot speak to each but are deeply in love.’ Indeed, in landscape paintings, the best way to integrate West and East is oil painting. Chinese oil painting is the new born for the dummy couple.

Applying oil painting methods in Chinese painting has a short history for only a hundred years. This new born for the dummy couple is so diverse for various painters in different works. No one is saying the Dong Xianzhou is definitely the best, the most perfect, the most prominent or the most glamorous, yet with his persistent, his passion and modesty for art no one can denied that with time goes by, he can find his own pathway to become one of the greatest painters with pictures moving the world.

Let’s wait and see.
