Although artists may have had accomplishment of scholars, they are not actually scholars themselves but some otherwise. As an artist, YANG Hong’s cognition of social mainstream culture comes from his personal experience and intuition. But, such a kind of awareness has its objective base, for people have both natural quality and culture attribute. Therefore, as an ideogenetic result, the knowledge and values culture contains may not match with the true circumstance, or even rather contrary. In this specific social and historical background, the agriculture, industry and post-industry are overlapped crisscrossly. On the other hand, the income differential between urban and rural areas, regions and industry types is huge and expanding further. But the spread of hedonism is not only confined to the well-off stratum in developed cities, but also penetrate in the whole society, including the hinterland. Those who can only take the concept of consumption due to their economic conditions, although they have no actual consuming ability they highly identify with pleasure-seeking. Even though the hedonism has not yet been in fashion it plays a dominant role in current society of China is the cultural reality.

So, YANG Hong chose to paint the intestines as the main image repeatedly, which drops the hint at his idea: the mainstream culture at present shows nothing at all but sensual desires. At first glance, his paintings provide an impression of all artistic languages, such as abstract expression, form aestheticism, realistic painting, collage of images, with a style of dreariment or keitch……but, in fact, he has tried to express the various of intestines’ forms and shapes in all different situations by changing the brushwork, colour, and image composition constantly. The chosen of nothing appeared but the belly bowel as a final image makes all become a physical response without a soul.

Human body contains flesh with the complex of multi-dimensions and levels. At the same time, its own strength is interacting with nature, society and culture aspects by re-shaping and re-forming itself, and in particular historical moment it will be transformed due to the exchange of time, region, race and sex. Man does not necessarily immerse himself in misery without being able to extricate oneself. The overflow hedonism has neither to alleviate the increasing stress nor to make relief of one’s body. In contrast, people who lose themselves in such prevalence situation are not born to do it, what makes them demand is the commodity which produce desires and also require a life of pleasure. The ideology of commercial awareness urges people to leave the old self behind and replace a new self with endless enthusiasm for consumption.

Happiness is sort of multivariate, multi-dimensional, circulating, transforming and fruiting, rather than blindly addicted to the sensual pleasure. When body is encoded by hedonism, joyfulness is shaped by cultural industry, and desire is modified by knowledge utterance, everything reduces the richness of one’s mind so as to make catabolic thought established on commercial value system. Therefore, get-it-while-you-can and solipsism arise at the historic moment for overdrawing the future and being regardless of others. To pursue the so-called “self-fulfilment” by exchanging one’s flesh would finally cause lacking of social responsibility and sense of duty; to worry much about one’s body lesion due to overnutrition rather than losing one’s appetite by thinking those whom struggling in straitened circumstances; the selfishness and calculated interchange hamper the moral principles, sincere claims and ideal speeches communicative rationality.

In 1990s, the body theory had been introduced into China, which had its positive meaning in boycott of the official ideology while it was also accompanied by a rise of consumerism. In addition, the theory had its rationality when considering the background of the rising after the western post-modernism. It has been switched into sensual consumption and enjoyment after stripping off from its primary situation so as to cause the human body dissimilation.

After the introspection of the paper-thin hedonism, depending on his sharp intuition and distinct experience, YANG Hong started to express the various kinds of relative state of alienation. He chose not to preach and analysing rigidly but using the power of human empathy, letting viewers comprehend voluntarily. When everything he has experienced turns into personal artistic language, instinctively, he tends to control the light and shadows, forms and colours, space and texture, so that his painting shows something beyond the word which also indirectly makes people felt what he is trying to tell.

Of course, the world itself is vivid with multi-dimensional aspects, even the current culture fact is hedonism it will be influenced by its logic evolution, along with social and political factors. An unknown new world is being unfolded on the course. Therefore, under such circumstances, one can be hopeful about the future of the world—it is based on the trust of one’s capacity for homeostasis.
