Osage Gallery today announced the appointment of Eugene Tan as Exhibitions Director. Dr Tan will relocate to Hong Kong from Singapore, where he was Programme Director for Contemporary Art at Sotheby's Institute of Art.

An art historian, critic and curator, Eugene Tan holds a PhD in Art History from the University of Manchester. He was previously Director of the Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore, curator for the Singapore Pavilion at the 2005 Venice Biennale and co-curator of the inaugural Singapore Biennale in 2006. Recent exhibitions he has curated include Always Here But Not Always Present: Art in a Senseless World in Singapore and Coffee, Cigarettes and Pad Thai: Contemporary Art in Southeast Asia in Taipei, both in 2008. He is co-author of the publication Contemporary Art in Singapore and has written for exhibition catalogues and publications, including art magazines such as Art Asia Pacific, Art Review, C-Arts, Contemporary, Flash Art, Metropolis M and Modern Painters.

“I am delighted that Eugene will be joining us in February”, said Osage Director Ms Agnes Lin. “He is an exceptionally well qualified and highly respected curator. His exhibitions are intellectually rigorous, finely crafted, challenging and exciting. Eugene will bring to Osage a fine critical edge that will help us to achieve our ambition to be the best gallery in Asia. We were very pleased to be voted Hong Kong’s Best Gallery in 2008 and now we want to extend that to the rest of Asia”, she said.

“At a time when many galleries are feeling the pinch of the global financial crisis, we think that it is essential to maintain the highest possible standards and to offer only top quality exhibitions”, she said. “Eugene will assist us to frame our curatorial direction and will be responsible for the management of all exhibitions and public presentations by Osage in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing and Singapore.”
