Strolls along New York’s High Line may look a bit different in the near future, since rumors are circulating that auctioneer Phillips de Pury and Company may move into a space on Park Avenue in midtown Manhattan, transferring at least some of its operations from its Chelsea branch along the elevated public park.

According to the New York Post, Phillips is said to have decided to move into a 30,000-square-foot space at 450 Park Avenue, a building own by Somerset Partners. The relocation would mark an intriguing shift for the contemporary-art-minded auctioneer, which would place it in closer physical proximity to Christie’s, which is located at Rockefeller Center, and Sotheby’s, which is housed on the Upper East Side. It could also prove to be a cost-cutting measure, since real estate prices in the area around the High Line have skyrocketed since the park opened last year, and midtown Park Ave has lost much of its blue-chip polish and attendant costs in recent years.

Phillips has not released any information about the plans, and Somerset did not immediately return calls related to the matter. If true, Phillips would find itself on the corner of 57th Street, the onetime home of many of New York’s first contemporary art galleries. The move could also be read as part of a broader shift uptown, with former Gavin Brown associate Alex Zachary among those gallerists opening spaces in uptown Manhattan in recent months.
