Voyage represents a gesture that connects two spaces. It also refers to the interrelation between two geographical shores. Mulan river runs through the entire Putian area, and flows eastwards into Taiwan Strait. This is a naturally-formed waterway, but also a migrating pathway. Since 2008, the collaborative project “Mulan River” has been exhibited in China from south to north, and in seven countries and regions crossing the borders from east to west. This time, it eventually returns to the other side of Putian-another distant faraway homeland. I remembered in the last period of 1980s, one of my classmates went to Taiwan to inherit his grandfather’s home business, it left a significant mark on the imaginary overseas map in our mind, what is this land look like? Time flies, and when we finally stepped on this soil, the reality has been blurred and intertwined with the fragments of 90s’ Taiwan movies inside our memories, making the reality seem unreal. Therefore, following with our memory lane, there might occur bits of memory fragments from various times and spaces simultaneously, each of which has its own storyline and content, dissolving and entwining with one another, we can’t seem to reach the boundaries existed in between. Life resembles a stage play, yet the play itself reciprocally unfolds in our life. The stage is made of a pile of props merely, each episode has its own narrative and tales, but they are eventually the shadows of the actors. Yet who are the actors? Are they not the other self that hides inside ourselves? Mulan river, as if the sea of memory that we can never seem to voyage beyond, following its running course, we see our personal belongs floating upwards, into the faraway land.
